Four Golden Circle football players were honored on the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 2A and Class 1A All-State football teams that were released Sunday and Monday. The APSE's Class 3A, 4A, and 5A teams will be released later this week.
Blooming Grove kicker Tyler Ellis was named to the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 2A all-state second team, and Mildred kicker Devin O'Sullivan was an honorable mention on the Class 2A all-state team, and Mildred running back and defensive back Draylon Sterling was an honorable mention. Kerens wide receiver Brett Anderson was an honorable mention on the Class 1A team.
Ellis, a junior, helped lead Blooming Grove to the second round of the playoffs and his career-long 48-yard field goal with seven seconds left beat Jacksboro in the opening round of the playoffs. Ellis played quarterback and was the district’s second team QB before making the all-state team as a kicker. He was perfect, kicking 5-of-5 field goals during the regular season before nailing the game-winner in the playoffs and he also made 45 of 47 PATs and had 25 touchbacks on kickoffs.
O’Sullivan set the Texas career record for PATS, kicking 269 extra points to set the record for all classifications in Texas.
O’Sullivan was also a first-team All-District linebacker for the Eagles.
Anderson was one of the keys to Kerens’ season and was a two-way starter and all-district first-team player as a wide receiver and as a defensive back. He finished the season with s47 receptions for 842 yards and eight touchdowns.
