GC Basketball: Weekend Roundup: Lady Jags win Hubbard Tournament

Corsicana — The Hubbard girls swept their way through the Hubbard Tournament and beat Waco Connally 55-48 on Saturday to win the title.

The Lady Jags were down 19-7 early and trailed 31-22 at halftime, but stormed out of the locker room and took the game over in the third, out-scoring Connally 20-5 to take a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Nakaila Banks led the way with 12 points, Kate Saucke dropped in 11 points and Tia Parks followed with 10. Tysheunna Hawthorne (4), Jaime Goodpaster (4), Jasmine Parks (5), Baylour Lewis (2), Shayla Parks (5) and Taylor Simmons (2) scored for unbeaten Hubbard.

GIRLS

Corsicana64. Venus 36


The Corsicana Lady Tigers improved to 11-5 with a romp over Venus as Corsicana used a tough pressure defense and some clutch shooting to win at home on Friday night.

Shamara Taylor saw her first action of the year and came off the bench to score eight points in her debut, and guard Robin Henley also saw her first action of the season and came off the bench to score seven points as the Lady Tigers got 23 bench points in the win.

Erica Melendez scored nine points and grabbed 15 rebounds, including 11 on offense, and Alexis Baston (9), Ariel Bartee (9), Moeshea Tolliver (2), Destini Lunsford (8), Kennady Betts (4), Briana Biltz (2) and Jamie Reeves (4) all scored for Corsicana.

BOYS

Corsicana 72, Cayuga 30


The Corsicana Tigers took home the consolation trophy at the Fairfield Tournament on Saturday. After losing 48-46 to Whitesboro in the opening round game on Thursday, Corsicana beat Marlin 73-35 and Cayuga 72-30.

Franklin 56, Kerens 51

The Kerens Bobcats went 1-2 in the Fairfield Tournament.

Nate Betts scored 25 in the opening round 50-46 loss to Whitesboro, and then Kerens beat Waco Robinson 55-47 in the second round game. Betts led the way with 28 points in the win. The Bobcats fell to Franklin 56-51 on Saturday despite 32 points from Betts. The Bobcats are now 6-4.
