GC Top 10 in '13: No. 2, Tigers football season ends up a mixed bag

Corsicana — After waiting until April to hire Steve Hoffman to replace Phil Castles, who left for 3A Henderson after four straight playoff seasons, it was a long year for the Tigers football program.

The team went 2-7 (fewest wins since 1978), gave up more points than any team in the history of the program, but flashed another potent offense. Sophomore running back Tray Owens ran for a school-record 467 yards in a 77-65 loss to Sulphur Springs — yes, 77-65 — and had 1,119 yards in four games before getting hurt in the first quarter of district.

Senior quarterback Devontay Bell and senior Donavan Fields picked up the slack. Bell ran for 1,482 yards and threw for 600 more and was named the Golden Circle offensive player of the year.
