GC volleyball: Mildred dominates 23-2A honors

Corsicana — Mildred topped off the best volleyball season in the schools history with a landslide in the District 23-2A All-District selections.

Mildred’s Joanna Tapley was the conference’s Most Valuable Player, Callie Bland was the Setter of the Year and Coach JoAnna Vaden was named the 23-2A Coach of the Year.

Mildred also had Savannah Pritchett named to the first team and Morgan McCreary made the second team.

Rice’s Sadie Gent was named 23-2A’s the Offensive Player of the Year, and Rice’s Kamran McGee made the first team. Blooming Grove’s Steely Southard was named to the first team and Blooming Grove’s Allie Jordan was named to the second team.

Tapley had 201 kills, 231 digs and a 90 percent serve-receive rating with 36 aces 36 and helped lead the Lady Eagles to a perfect 10-0 district record and was a big reason Mildred advanced to the area round of the playoffs — the best finish in the school’s history.     

Bland had 129 kills, 260 digs and 478 assists, and Vaden, who has been at Mildred four years, made history as the coach who turned the program around.

Gent had a 209 kills 63 saves, 283 digs and 97 a percent service-receive rating with 29 aces.

    Former Mildred quarterback and Golden Circle Del Thrash Player of the Year Nic Shimonek is leaving the University of Iowa after one red-shirt year and transferring to Texas Tech because of Iowa's pro-style offense.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
