Record-breaking Mildred storms past Scurry-Rosser, 83-0

MILDRED — — Patrick Harvell won’t compare teams from year to year, but he knows one thing: He’s got another good one.

The Eagles finished the season with fireworks, both pre-game and during it, smashing Scurry-Rosser, 83-0, on Senior Night at Asby Field. The Wildcats entered the game with a chance to make the playoffs it they could upset Mildred.

One minute into the game, it was 7-0. Three minutes in, 14-0. Less than five minutes in, 21-0.

You get the picture, and Mildred (9-1, 7-0 in District 6-2A DII) rolled as Draylon Sterling scored six touchdowns and quarterback Nic Shimonek threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

The Eagles earned a bye in the playoffs, and will return to action the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Mildred went 10-0 last year, and the season did not end until they lost by a touchdown in the state semifinals.

“I don’t compare teams. Every team is different,” Harvell said. “But I feel good about this team. If we continue with the effort we’ve played with since Week 2, we’ll be a good playoff team.”

Harvell has no complaints. His squad is playing well on defense; Scurry-Rosser (5-4, 4-3) managed 146 yards, 96 in a second half in which the clock stopped once, when the quarter changed. His special teams are solid, save for a botched extra point and poor kickoff coverage Friday. He called Sterling the best punt returner in Class 2A. In the state. He had three returns for 84 yards Friday.

And the offense? It’s borderline ridiculous. In the last five weeks, the Eagles have set and broke the school record for scoring three times. It started Oct. 12 in a 77-0 win over Millsap. Two weeks later, the Eagles scored a 79-0 win over Rice.

Then Friday, Mildred led 69-0 at the half, and had two touchdowns on two second-half drives to break 80. In seven district games, Mildred has averaged 69.3 points and allowed 3.6.

“We’re playing well in all facets of the game,” Harvell said.

Mildred, which scored 599 points in the regular season, had 405 yards in the first 24 minutes, and ran only 27 plays to build a 10-touchdown lead. The Eagles did have a defensive score, as middle linebacker Devin O’Sullivan — often in the box score because he also kicks extra points, a lot of them — scooped up a fumble caused by defensive end Joe Carrizales at the Scurry-Rosser 40 and raced untouched into the end zone to make it 62-0.

The Eagles ended the night with 496 yards.

Harvell hearkened back to the second game of the season, when the Eagles lost at now No. 6 Centerville, 70-22, in a non-district matchup of 2A powers.

“That loss helped us,” Harvell said. “It was an eye-opener, and our kids responded well. It’s one of the things I am most proud of.”
