GC Baseball: Mildred downs Rice 8-1, Kerens rips Cross Roads 12-0

Corsicana — Collin Linex went 3 for 3 with two runs and pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run as Mildred beat Rice  8-1 Friday to move to 4-3 in District 23-2A. Linex was lifted in the seventh after 93 pitches, scattering five hits, fanning two, walking three and hitting a batter.

Mildred took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Jase Butler that plated Linex, who had reached on the first of two infield hits. In the fourth, Hunter Freeman tripled, and scored on a Linex double. The Eagles added a run on one of eight Rice errors.

The Eagles added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, with Clay Waller driving in a run with a single in the sixth. Will Burnham went 2 for 4, and John Aldama was 1 for 4 with two runs. Danny Smith had an infield single.

Waller pitched the final two-thirds for Mildred, as the game ended on a double play – the fourth of the game for Mildred – when right fielder Justin Jenkins threw out Justin Smith trying to score from third on a flyout.

Garrett Weaver went the distance for the Bulldogs, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out four, and walked only one.

Adan Payne went 2 for 3 to lead Rice at the plate. He had a double, a stolen base and scored the Bulldogs lone run on a fielder’s choice ground out by Chase McCall. Connor Roberts was 1 for 3, while Jamie Metcalfe was 1 for 1, and reached by walk and a hit by pitch. Smith was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Kerens 12, Cross Roads 0 (4 innings)

Brett Anderson struck out nine of the 14 batters he faced and gave up one hit as Kerens had yet another one-sided win.

Jeremey Gould went 3 for 3, scored three times and drove in tow runs, and Brent Warren went 3 for 3, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead the Bobcats at the plate.

  • Back in Action.jpg GC Football: Two-a-days: Back to Action

    It's here.
When the sun comes up Monday morning it's not just the dawn of a new day, but the dawn of a new season — it's the beginning of two-a-days.
Eight of the nine schools in the Golden Circle will begin football practice Monday while Corsicana waits until Aug. 8 to start. The Tigers begin a week later because they held spring practice.
For last year's playoff teams such as Mildred, Blooming Grove, Kerens, Frost and Hubbard Monday begins a road back to the postseason and for everyone else its the start of a new march. For everyone, it's the most optimistic day of the year.

  • RON MORGAN.jpg Morgan: ESPN was wrong in suspending Smith

I won’t be watching ESPN this coming week. For a network that has been made into an empire by covering baseballs, footballs, basketballs, golf balls, soccer balls, tennis balls (I’ve never watched hockey, but I understand they have no balls), this network is much like hockey. They lack the things they are covering.

    Breanna Baxter is back.
That's bad news for anyone facing the Kerens volleyball team this year.
But there is so much more than Baxter, an all-state player in volleyball, basketball and track & field who was the Golden Circle Female Athlete of the Year in 2014.

  • I7-31-14 Mayper.jpg Navarro Football: Nothing changes for success-minded Bulldogs

It didn't take long for Navarro football Coach Brian Mayper  to deliver his preseason message at the SWJCFC Media Day Thursday.
“No surprises at Navarro,'' said Mayper, the first of the seven conference coaches to speak to the media. “We're running the same stuff. You guys know we're going to run the ball. And thank God, we're not changes defenses again this year.''
Mayper's real message is that life at Navarro is all about winning, and all about a culture that expects to win.
“We expect to win them all. If you don't, you're in the wrong business,'' Mayper said. “I think our kids expect it, too.''
