GC Basketball: Roundup — Corsicana's Tigers fall to Lindale, 45-42, Mildred boys win, Frost, Kerens, Wortham girls all win

Corsicana — It was a tough night for the Corsicana Tigers, who lost their third close game in District 16-4A Tuesday, falling to Lindale 45-42. The Tigers, who beat district favorite Whitehouse in the district opener, are now 1-3 in the 16-4A race.

The Tigers led 22-18 at halftime, but Lindale took a 33-32 lead into the fourth quarter and hung on to win at Corsicana.

Mike Lewis led the Tigers with 13 points, Jonah McKissack followed with nine points and Ralph Watts had eight. Jamaal Evans (7) and Danair Martin (5) also scored for Corsicana.

Girls

Frost 43, Coolidge 32


The Frost Lady Bears took control of the District 19-1A DII race by rallying in the second half to earn a road win over the Coolidge Lady Yellowjackets.  Frost, down by three at halftime, outscored Coolidge, 30-16, in the third and fourth quarters to remain a perfect 10-0 in district play. Jae Moore led all scorers with 24 points to pace the Lady Bears, and Diana Rios added 13. Closing out the scoring for Frost were Madison Revill (4) and Karlie Scott (2). With the win, Frost, ranked No. 2 in the latest TGCA poll, improves to 19-2 on the season. Coolidge falls two games behind Frost at 8-2.

 

Kerens 85,

Cayuga 55


Behind a combined 48 points from Taylor Ames and Breanna Baxter, the LadyCats used a dominating second quarter to run past the Cayuga Lady Wildcats in a key District 18-1A DI game. After leading by only three at the end of the first quarter, Kerens (19-4) outscored Cayuga, 26-11, in the second quarter to take control by halftime. Ames and Baxter, both with 24 points, led a quartet of LadyCats in double figures. Tinesha Tolliver dropped in 14 points, while Cambree Betts had 10. Others contributing to the LadyCat cause included Marqueshia Kelly (9), Kiara Lindsey (2), and Emmanuella Armant (2).

 

Wortham 38,

Cross Roads 26


Wortham improves to 15-7 on the season and evened its District 18-1A DI record at 3-3 by winning at home against Cross Roads. Despite playing without starting post Kierra Busby, the Lady Bulldogs got out to a quick 15-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, and outscored the Lady Bobcats, 11-4, in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Courtney Chasteen, who finished with 12 points, was the only Lady Bulldog with double digits in the defensive affair.  Kamarie Freeman added nine points, and Kameron Rhodes had eight. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Elisha Libhart (6) and Sara Sessions (3).

 

Boys

Buffalo 82, Rice 75


Despite 25 points from Sim Nezar, Rice dropped another close District 23-2A contest, losing on the road in Buffalo. The Bulldogs, who led by three entering the fourth quarter, were outscored, 29-16, in the final quarter to drop to 1-6 in district play.  Both Daniel Arteaga and Colin Haston dropped in 13 points for the Bulldogs, and Austin Peppers added seven points. Others finding the scoring column for Rice included Jamie Metcalfe (5), Dylynn Anderson (5), Raven Huffman (5), and Conner Roberts (2).



Mildred 75,

Riesel 32


Led by a trio of double digit scores, the Mildred Eagles blasted the Riesel Indians to edge ahead of idle Marlin in the ultra-competitive District 23-2A race.  Russell Holden scored 15 points, Mikey Muncy added 14, while Jordan Harvell dropped in 12 to pace the Eagles.  Mildred raced out to an early 17-7 led and never look back in coasting to the win. Mildred is now 6-1 in the district race and Marlin is 5-1.
