GC Baseball: Dawson, Kerens ranked in Top 20 preseason baseball poll

Corsicana — Two Golden Circle baseball teams have earned a preseason Top 20 ranking.

Dawson’s Bulldogs, who won 20 games and reached the state regional semifinal a year ago, and Kerens’ Bobcats, who won 18 games and made it to the Area round of the playoffs, are both ranked in the Top 20 in the TxHighSchoolBaseball.com. Class 1A state baseball poll. The website has Dawson ranked No. 7 in Texas and has Kerens ranked No. 16.

Here’s a rundown of the preseason state poll.

1. Douglass Indians – 8 starters from 24-5 Regional Final Team. Sr P/IF Matthew Wallace (21-1A MVP/5-2,1.98), Sr C Brandon Stanfield (Defensive MVP/.483)

2. Price Carlisle Indians – 5 starters from 29-1 State Championship Team. Sr SS Caleb Colley (20-1A Defensive MVP/2nd Team All-State), Sr OF/RHP Zach Brightwell (20-1A Offensive MVP/2nd Team All-State)

3. Bosqueville Bulldogs – 5 starters from 29-6-1 Regional Semifinal Team. Jr SS/P Carl Collins (.495/1.53, 86 Ks) Jr P/1B Bret Mathis (.366/0.74, 145 Ks)

4. Anson Tigers – 7 starters from 26-6 Regional Final Team. Sr P/1B Matt Villanueva (.451, 7 HRs, 48 RBIs/13-2, 0.58, 150 Ks), Sr C Stetson Meek (.462, 2 HRs, 31 RBIs)

5. Flatonia Bulldogs – 6 starters from 24-13 Regional Final Team. Sr C Will Bruns (28-1A Defensive MVP/.337, 48 Runs), Jr P/1B Marcus Mica (10-2, 1.86, 83 Ks)

6. Ira Bulldogs – 7 starters from 17-4 Regional Semifinal Team. Sr P/3B Jared Goodwin (.394, 22 RBIs/9-0, 0.93), Sr P/SS Tyler Goodwin (1st Team All-District Pitcher)

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
