The Kerens LadyCats volleyball team has toyed with playing five-set matches going back to last season.
They were at it again in Tuesday night’s Region II-1A bi-district playoff match against Kopperl at the Wolens Special Events Center. The LadyCats started strong, then had to hold on for a four-set victory over the Eagles.
“We like to play forever,” Kerens coach Kristen Lynch said. “We don’t know how to finish.”
Kerens (21-12) advanced with a 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 win over Kopperl, advancing to play Milano on Thursday night at Waco Robinson.
Sophomore standout Breanna Wells was the hitting star at the end, winning the final two points on monster kills with Kerens trying to finish off Kopperl with a 23-22 lead.
“It helped us build our confidence and put us in the right direction as a team,” Wells said.
Kerens dominated the first set as Wells had a strong serving game. Marqueshia Kelly had six kills in the second set as the LadyCats looked like they might sweep.
But Kopperl kept fighting led by senior Brittany Sutton, who had four kills in the third set.
The Eagles looked like they were going to take the fourth set, building a 20-17 lead. But Wells took over as the LadyCats won the final four points with the sophomore racking up three kills.
Wortham sweeps Frost: Amber Libhart had 15 kills and eight blocks as Wortham beat Frost 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 at the Wolens Special Events Center.

Frost freshman Jae Moore had 12 kills to lead the way for the Lady Polar Bears. Frost (13-11) had a great chance to even the match in the second set as Moore had two kills to tie the score at 23-23.
But the senior Libhart responded with two kills of her own, and the Lady Bulldogs cruised in the third set behind the serving of Hannah McCord, who served 10 straight points as Wortham took a 12-3 lead.
“It was a little rough,” Wortham coach Lori Ward said. “We need to clean some stuff up. We stayed with it.”
