GC Volleyball: Rice, Wortham finish strong in tournaments

Corsicana — Rice took home fourth place in the Eustace Tournament over the weekend, going 2-1 on the opening day Thursday to get into the championship bracket and then defeated Palmer, 25-15, 25-18 on Saturday to advance. Rice fell in the second game Saturday, losing to Mabank, 25-18, 25-10.

Rice faced Brookhill in the consolation game and took fourth after losing a tough match, 25-22, 25-20.

Hannah Owens had six assists and a kill against Palmer, and went 5-for-5 serving with an ace, four saves and four assists against Mabank. She was 10-of-10 serving against Brookhill with two kills, three saves and six assists.

Sadie Gent went 10-of-11 with five kills, four saves and eight digs against Palmer, and she was 14-of-14 hitting against Mabank with four kills and six digs.

Brianna Weaver was 16-of-17 serving with two aces, five digs and five saves against Palmer, and she was 9-of-9 serving with a kill and two saves against Mabank.

Samantha Harris was 8-of-8 hitting against Palmer with three kills and she was 11-of-12 hitting with six kills and a dig against Brookhill. Kamran McGee was 5-of-6 hitting with two kills against Palmer and had a kill and four blocks against Brookhill. Trista McGee had seven digs against Mabank and was 8-of-9 serving with four digs against Bookhill. Emily Fletcher was 9-of-10 serving with five assists, one save and a dig against Palmer. Rice is now 8-3.



Wortham takes third at Groesbeck Tournament

Wortham had a strong showing over the weekend at Groesbeck, finishing third in a tournament loaded with good teams. Wortham lost to Grandview, 25-23, 20-20, 25-12 to start the day on Saturday, but came back to beat Bruceville Eddy, 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 10-25, 15-9 to make it to the consolation final, where Wortham swept Coolidge, 25-22, 25-10.

Katie Looney led on the service line against Grandview with 17 serves and two aces. Sarah Sessions had 21 digs and Elisha Libhart had 20 serves, 17 digs and 20 kills. Kierra Busby had 12 kills and  five blocks, and Hannah McCord had six kills. Kendle Rhodes had 27 assists and Ashley Anderson had 17 serves and four blocks.

Libhart had 20 serves and 18 kills against Bruceville Eddy while Anderson had 17 serves and 13 digs. Sessions had 10 digs and Rhodes had 13 digs, seven kills and three blocks. Camey Shaffer had 15 kills and four blocks and McCord had 10 kills.

In the consolation final, Anderson led with 13 serves and four kills and Looney had 10 serves. Sessions had 16 digs while Libhart (seven), Busby (six), Anderson (four), Shaffer (four) and McCord (three) led the way in kills. Busby also had three blocks.
