Malakoff wins 75th anniversary 40-8 over Kerens Bobcats

Malakoff —

The Malakoff Tigers' continue to score points at a torrid pace in the first three weeks of the football season.

The Tiger's improved to 3-0 with a 40-8 thumping of the Kerens Bobcats in the 75th anniversary of the Trinity River Rivalry at Tigers Stadium Friday night.

With the win, the Tiger's have now won five straight matches in the series.

Malakoff senior running back Demontes Dowell had another solid game for the Tiger's with 141 yards on only 12 carries and two touchdowns.

Marcus Dowell led off the scoring for Malakoff in the first quarter with a nice power run for eight yards and the 7-0 lead. Rene Aguilar botted the PAT good.

Kerens was able to put together a nice drive late in the first quarter as they marched down to the Malakoff 17-yard line. On the next play, Kerens quarterback Nate Betts to the end zone but Malakoff's Dariuhn Jackson leaped up and pulled down the interception to keep Kerens scoreless.

With 3:46 remaining in the second quarter, Demontes Dowell powered his way in from three yards out for the 13-0 lead.

On Kerens next drive, Garrian McCalister stepped in front of a Betts pass and took it 35-yards to the house to extend the lead to 19-0 in the first half.

Demontes Dowell continued the scoring in the third quarter with a nice run down the left sideline and then veered his way back to the right for a 36-yard touchdown run. Omar Gonzalez booted the PAT good.

The offensive onslaught continued in the third quarter as Jared Givens hauled in a 24-yard touchdown by Stephen Wolfe. Gonzalez booted his second PAT good with 2:35 remaining.

Malakoff put the final nail in the coffin as Wolfe found a wide open Deric Greenhaw — who scampered his way in from 14 yards for the 40-0 lead with 11:07 remaining in the game.

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.
