Mildred boots Frankston, 42-19

FRANKSTON — For 24

minutes, Mildred and

Frankston slugged it out. In

the span of three minutes

in the third quarter, that all

changed.

The Eagles found some

offense, made a few big

defensive plays and took

advantage of opportunities

in a 42-19 victory at Jeff

and Opal Austin Stadium.

Mildred (2-1) turned a

two-point halftime lead into

a 22-point lead quickly, and

ended up holding Frankston

(0-3) three second half first

downs. The Indians had 88

second-half yards, but 63

came on a Kendrick Rogers

touchdown pass.

The Eagles broke the

game open with three

touchdowns in three minutes

midway through the

third quarter. Frankston

had scored right before the

half, took the second half

kickoff with the momentum,

but went three and out.

Three plays later, Mildred

took a 21-13 lead on a 50-

yard screen to Draylon

Sterling, who went

untouched down the right

sideline after getting the

edge sealed by receivers

Connor Hill and Mikey

Muncy.

On Frankston’s second

play following, lineback

Devin O’Sullivan jumped a

slant route and picked off

the second of three Ozzie

Buckner passes. Mildred

needed one play to score,

with Will Burnham hitting

Hill for 30 yards and 28-13

lead with 7:54 left in the

third.

After another quick

three-and-out, Sterling

erased a 42-yard Gunner

Murphy punt with a 41-

yard return, and an

unsportsmanlike penalty

moved it to the Frankston

10. On second-and-goal

from the 15 after a penalty,

Sterling scored up the middle.

O’Sullivan’s extra point

made it 35-13 with 5:31 and

a competitive, long first half

suddenly seemed like a distant

memory.

Sterling added a 31-yard

run midway through the

fourth, two minutes before

Buckner found Rogers for

63 yards over the middle to

close the scoring.

Mildred clung to a 15-13

lead after a long, strange

first half that included two

ejections, 11 penalties and

11 incompletions to stop the

clock.

Mildred got three field

goals from O’Sullivan from

28, 41 and 22 yards, the

last of which put the Eagles

up 15-7 with 1:51 to go in

the half. On the ensuing

kickoff, a 62-yard Justice

Bean kickoff return was

wiped out as two players

fought 40 yards behind

where the play ended. It

resulted in offsetting penalties

and rekick, that went

out of bounds, and led to

another kickoff. After three

attempts, Frankston took

over at its 40 with 1:26 left.

A 28-yard Kaivon

Jackson run on second

down set up a pair of

Buckner-to-Bean completions,

the final of which the

sophomore wide receiver

scooped off the ground for a

20-yard touchdown with

nine seconds left. The

Indians went for two, but

Hill batted down Buckner’s

pass into the end zone, and

Mildred took a 15-13 lead

into the half.

Mildred drove inside the

Indians’ 10 to open the

game, but the drive stalled,

and O’Sullivan booted a 28-

yard field goal to make it 3-

0. The lead didn’t last long.

Rogers, an impressive

sophomore, took the ensuing

kickoff one-yard deep in

the end zone, slipped a

tackle about the 15, then

basically went untouched

down the right sideline to

give Frankston a 7-0 lead

16 seconds after Mildred’s

opening score.

The Eagles came back

and cut the lead to 7-6 on

O’Sullivan’s 41-yard kick,

capping a seven-play drive

sparked by 18-yard Sterling

and 16-yard Hunter

Freeman runs. In another

oddity, Sterling was

dropped for three yards on

second-and-8. Frankston

declined an illegal motion

penalty, but the umpire had

moved with the football.

When it was finally spotted,

it was another three yards

back, and Mildred faced

third-and-14. Sterling had a

three-yard run afterward,

and Mildred settled for the

field goal with 6:38 left in

the first.

Frankston drove inside

Mildred’s 20 on its next

drive, has Buckner had

completions of 22 to Rogers

and 26 to Waylon Morris.

On first down, a bad snap

from the shotgun cost

Frankston 13 yards, and on

second down, Buckner was

intercepted by Sterling, it

took 85 yards for a touchdown.

It was wiped out by a

block in the back.

Eight plays later,

Sterling again found the

end zone, this time on a 64-

yard run that ended an 88-

yard drive. The kick was

blocked, and Mildred led

12-7 with 1:28 to go in the

first quarter.
