Kerens 74, Maypearl 69 OT
The Kerens Lady Cats, ranked No. 3 in the state, had an instant classic Friday night, beating Maypearl 74-69 in overtime in just their second game of the season.
The Lady Cats (2-0) started practice late because of the team’s run in the state volleyball playoffs, but they came through in the clutch on Friday after Maypearl, which trailed 51-38 after three quarters, stormed back at home to send the game to OT at 64-64.
But Kerens put the game away, outscoring Maypearl 10-5 in the overtime period. Marqueshia Kelly and Breanna Baxter combined for 38 points and 17 rebounds as they both dropped in 19 points, and Kelly led the team with nine rebounds while Baxter brought down eight. Taylor Ames, who has led Kerens in scoring in its first two games, had a 22-point night and hit five 3’s along the way.
