Falcon Thompson led Blooming Grove to a 7-3 season-opening win over Italy on Friday. Thompson, a senior southpaw, pitched all six innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits while striking out six and walking two. Thompson also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run in the Lady Lions' six-run outburst in the bottom of the second.
Senior catcher Steely Southard also sparked the defense, throwing out both Italy base-runners who tried to steal. Blooming Grove scattered seven hits. Southard, Rachel East, Katie Haden, Sidney Horner and Brittany Nichols all singled. East, Haden, Horner, Nichols, Southard, Mariah Horner and Cassie Morgan each scored a run. Southard had two RBIs, while Haden and Sidney Horner both drove in one run.
Rice 18, Avalon 1
The Rice Lady Bulldogs needed only four innings to complete the mercy-rule rout and improved to 2-0. Hannah Owens got the win to improve to 2-0, giving up one run on one hit and striking out four over two innings. Kaitlyn Robinson finished the game for Rice, striking out two.
Sam Harris (2-2, 2 runs 1 RBI), Kassidy Blake (3-3, 3 runs 2 RBIs), Owens (3-3, 3 runs, 5 RBIs), Ashton Metcalfe (1-1, 2 BB, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Rebecca Alsup (1-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Haven Keilers (2-2,1 BB, 3 runs, 1 RBI), Ruby Ramirez (1-2, 1 BB, 2 RBIs), Emily Northcutt (2-2, 1 run), Olivia Zellar (1-1, 1 run) and Robinson (1 BB ,1 HP 1 RBI) led Rice at the plate.
Dawson goes 5-1
Dawson opened its season by going 5-1 and finishing fifth in the 16-team Bruceville-Eddy Tournament. Dawson shut out Valley Mills, 7-0 and Troy’s JV, 12-0, to open the tournament, and edged Alvarado 2-1 before losing to Florence 10-0. The Lady Bulldogs beat Mexia 3-2 and defeated Alvarado 18-4 to take home fifth place.
Kerens 4, Wortham 0
Kerens opened its baseball season with a 4-0 win over Wortham as Brett Anderson struck out 12 batters in tossing a shutout to start his season.
Anderson also wen t 1-for 3 at the plates. Aaron Foxworth was the star at the plate for the Bobcats, he went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Mitchel Solis (2-4), Noeh Solis (1-2), Tanner Davis (1-3), Garrett Berry (1-3) and Jeremy Gould (also had hits for Kerens. Wortham’s Ethan McCoslin (1-2) led the Bulldogs.
