GC SOFTBALL: Corsicana ties Grandview on windy day

Corsicana — The wind was tougher to beat than Grandview on Friday morning on the Corsicana softball diamond, where a blustering and chilly wind dominated a scoreless game that ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Tigers almost pulled out a win, but Sidney Kirk was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game.

“Why not,’’ said Corsicana Coach Elizabeth Collier about sending Kirk. The coach and the kids care more about how they’re playing right now — and they are playing well.

They swept the first two games of their own tournament on Thursday, beating Malakoff 8-2 and shutting out Kaufman 15-0.

Kirk was the winning pitcher against Malakoff and she hit a home run against Kaufman.

Kirk has already belted seven homers and hit the only ball that sailed over an outfielder’s head for a double Friday morning as the brutal wind knocked down everything but the players, and pitcher Chelsea Vandiver belted a deep fly to center that would have been out of the park on a normal day.

“We could have had a couple go out,’’ said Collier, who first held Kirk up and then sent her home on Carly Cates single. “Now is the time we can figure out what we can push and find out about ourselves.

“We played well,’’ she said. “You play outdoors and you’ve got to deal with the wind. We played well (against Malakoff and Kaufman) and we hit the ball well today. You just have to some adjustments o the wind. We had three innings when we got out of and left runners on base.’’

Collier, whose team has two ties and five wins in 15 games, just wants to see her kids improve and be ready when the District 16-4A season rolls around.

“Vandiver has been pitching real well,’’ she said of her ace.

Vandiver, a freshman, pitched the shutout against Kaufman and tossed a three-hit shutout with a couple of strikeouts and no walks against Grandview.

“I’ve gotten better as the season has worn on,’’ Vandiver said. “It was hard with the wind. It was hard to hit your spots.’’

This weekend’s tournament should help everyone on the Tigers, who had not played a game at home until this week.

“I think it will help us get were we need to be,’’ Kirk said. “I think playing at home helps give us more confidence and helps us get rolling.’’
