Frost, Mildred snare accolades in Winter Texas Football edition

From Staff Reports

Corsicana — Frost was named the surprise team of the Class 1A football season, and Mildred landed two players on the All-Texas High School football team in the Dave Campbell's Winter 2013 Texas Football edition. Texas A&M's Johnny Manzel, the Heisman Trophy winner who led the Aggies resurgence in their first season in the SEC, graces the cover.

It is expected to be on store shelves later this month.

Perhaps no more surprising than Manzel's cover was Frost being honored as 1A's "Suprise Team of the Year." The Polar Bears went 12-2 this year, and barely lost in the quarterfinals to defending state champion Tenaha. The blurb on the Polar Bears includes a photo of running back Danial Steels.

Mildred (13-2) finished the year third in Texas Football's final Class 2A Division II poll. The state finalists were also represented on the prestigious All-Texas High School Team as offensive lineman Noah Pennell and defensive back Draylon Sterling were second-team picks. Only 10 offensive lineman and eight defensive backs state-wide were honored. Quarterback Nic Shimonek was a 2A player of the year finalist, and is pictured in the 2A year in review section.

Former Navarro cornerback D.J. Hayden, a senior at Houston, was named to the second-team All-Texas College Team. Traylon Shead, the only Texas junior college back to gain 1,000 yards in the fall, is listed among the "Two Key Recruits" for SMU.
