Basketball tournaments: Hoops aplenty in Golden Circle

Navarro hosts 2nd Lewis Orr Classic; CHS girls have Janie Biltz tourney

It’s time for the first wave of basketball tournaments in Corsicana.

Up this week — the Lewis Orr Classic on Thursday and Friday at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center. And the Janie Biltz Girls Basketball Tournament hosted by the Lady Tigers.

The girls tournament starts with two games at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. The Lady Tigers play Terrell at 10:30 a.m. and Dallas Christian at 6 p.m.

In all, their are 18 games on Thursday and 18 more on Friday. Eleven more games are slated for Saturday, including the championship game at 4 p.m. at Tigers Gym.

“This is huge to host a tournament and show off your town and community,” Lady Tigers coach Art Prevost said. “I told our kids this is their tournament.”

Six junior college basketball games will be played Thursday and Friday at the Wolens Center. Navarro (3-2) will play Hill at 8 p.m. Thursday and Temple at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Runnin’ Bulldogs coach Johnny Estelle said Wednesday night it’s a standout field including Jacksonville, Temple, Angelina, McLennan, Hill and Navarro. Temple lost at home to No. 1 ranked South Plains, 76-73, on Tuesday.

“It’s going to be a good one,” Estelle said. “Hill is good. Temple and Jacksonville is going to a barnburner.”

Navarro is trying to deal with an injury to starting point guard Jonathan Benn, who is out for the classic. The No. 17 Runnin’ Bulldogs lost to McLennan 74-71 on Tuesday. Navarro has lost two games by a combined five points.

“We played pretty well the other tonight,” Estelle said. “We couldn’t sustain it. We had our chances but didn’t get it done. I feel good about the tournament. It takes time to regroup from losing your point guard.”
