HS Football Playoffs: Frost matches deepest playoff run with 38-14 win

TEAGUE -- — The Frost Polar Bears put on another clinic on running the Wing T, once again in a playoff game.

All the Polar Bears did was grind out drives and take the will out of Mount Enterprise, scoring on their first two drives and rolling to a 38-14 victory over the Wildcats in a Region III-1A DII Regional at Teague Lion Stadium.

Frost racked up 386 yards rushing on 62 carries and scored on all but three possessions, punting once and fumbling an uncharacteristic two times.

"Our offensive line did a great job again," Frost coach Eric Blenden said. "And our backs got in there and kept drives going."

Frost (11-1) advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs for the second time in school history, matching the 1989 Polar Bears for the deepest postseason run. Frost will play Tenana on Friday night in Van.

Frost set the tone early for the second straight game. It was a six-minute drive last week against Chilton on the first drive. This time it took 19 seconds to score.

Steels took a handoff on a counter to the right -- he was lined up on the left wing -- and he made a cut and outran the Wildcats defense for a 56-yard touchdown. Steels scored on the two-point conversion for an 8-0 Frost lead.

Mount Enterprise answered as speedy tailback Justin Johnson scored on a 28-yard touchdown run and a two-point pass tied the game at 8-8.

Frost didn't blink. Steels, who rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns, scored after a foiled onside kick, rambling 32 yards for a score. Woody Woods converted the two-point conversion this time to give Frost a 16-8 lead.

Mount Enterprise then fumbled in Frost territory, one of four Wildcat turnovers, and the Polar Bears cashed in with a 79-yard drive, capped by a two-yard run by Robert Worley.

Frost had a chance to score at the end of the first half, driving down to the Wildcats 2, but a fumble by Steels left the Polar Bears with a 24-8 lead at halftime.

Frost's defense took over in the second half, stopping Mount Enterprise on its opening drive of the third quarter. The Wildcats tried a statue of liberty play at the Frost 49 and the Polar Bears snuffed it out.

Steels then scored his third touchdown, this time a 6-yard run for a 30-14 lead with 3:09 left in the game.

Frost held Mount Enterprise to 251 yards of offense. Wildcats fullback Hunter Ammons, who rushed for 340 yards last week in a playoff win over Maud, was held to 62 yards on seven carries. He came into the game with elbow injury and didn't play most of the second half.

The Polar Bears kept the Wildcats guessing which running back would get the carry and the offensive line against turned in a dominant performance.

Just typical stuff for a Frost team that keeps on winning playoff games.
