Navarro great Cole featured in magazine

Top prospect killed in accident in ‘01

If you do one thing this weekend or on Monday, pick up a copy of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated — the 2013 Baseball Season Preview — when it hits the stores (or borrow one from a friend that subscribes who already has it).

Just an amazing story on "The Best Player You Never Saw" about former Navarro great Brian Cole. Cole's No. 3 is retired on the Graham Field wall. It's a beautifully written story about Cole's rise from Navarro to becoming one of the New York Mets' top prospects before a car accident took his life in 2001.

All-Stars CC Sabathia and Albert Pujols are quoted in the story as well as Corsicana baseball coach Heath Autrey and former Navarro coaches Skip Johnson and Keith Thomas. It is worth the 20 minutes it takes to read.

  • GC Football: Two-a-days: Back to Action

    It's here.
When the sun comes up Monday morning it's not just the dawn of a new day, but the dawn of a new season — it's the beginning of two-a-days.
Eight of the nine schools in the Golden Circle will begin football practice Monday while Corsicana waits until Aug. 8 to start. The Tigers begin a week later because they held spring practice.
For last year's playoff teams such as Mildred, Blooming Grove, Kerens, Frost and Hubbard Monday begins a road back to the postseason and for everyone else its the start of a new march. For everyone, it's the most optimistic day of the year.

  • I7-31-14 Mayper.jpg Navarro Football: Nothing changes for success-minded Bulldogs

It didn't take long for Navarro football Coach Brian Mayper  to deliver his preseason message at the SWJCFC Media Day Thursday.
“No surprises at Navarro,'' said Mayper, the first of the seven conference coaches to speak to the media. “We're running the same stuff. You guys know we're going to run the ball. And thank God, we're not changes defenses again this year.''
Mayper's real message is that life at Navarro is all about winning, and all about a culture that expects to win.
“We expect to win them all. If you don't, you're in the wrong business,'' Mayper said. “I think our kids expect it, too.''

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
