Corsicana — The Navarro volleyball team attempted to do something Wednesday night that only one team has accomplished this year, upset the Tyler Junior College Apaches.

The Apaches, who are 22-1 and ranked third in the nation, showed why they got that ranking by winning at Navarro in three sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-8 in front of a near capacity crown at Bulldog gymnasium.

In set one TJC jumped out to a quick 16-5 lead and never looked back. The Apaches looked as if they would have three easy wins, however, no one told the Lady Bulldogs as they came out blazing in the next set.

In set two, the Bulldogs went strong at trying to end TJC's winning ways by tying the score at 11.  Navarro was led by Hailee Showers, Katie Bellerd and Ali Evans in set two. Bellerd was soaring high, blocking numerous kill attempts by TJC, while fellow teammates, Showers and Evans teamed up for six kills against a tough Apache defense.

All was going well and then TJC went on a 6-0 run to shut down the comeback attempt and seal set two by a final of 25-14.

Set three was dominated by the Apaches from start to finish. Leading Navarro for the match were Showers (10 kills), Evans (7 kills),  Bellerd (2 blocks, 3 kills, 2 aces), Lexy Wilson (8 digs, 6 saves), Madison Hillis (3 kills), Amber Libheart (3 blocks).

After the game a visibly disappointed, but optimistic coach Kacey McBrearty stated, "These girls never give up. We have a great core group here who love the game," she said. "This core group will be the ones that will be back next year."

The Bulldogs are now 5-14 and 0-5 conference with three games remaining.
