HUBBARD — In the District 9-1A DII opener for both clubs, the Hubbard Jaguars made a strong statement about defending their district crown from a year ago as they dismantled the visiting Frost Polar Bears by a final count of 64-0.

Hubbard celebrated its Homecoming 2013 by scoring on nine of its 10 offensive possessions and only a lost fumble kept the Jags from possibly making it 10 for 10 as the Polar Bears had few answers for their hosts on either side of the football.

The Jaguars put up 22 points in each of the first and second quarters to lead 44-0 at the half before tacking on 14 more in the third and adding a final touchdown in the closing minutes of the game.

Hubbard sophomore quarterback Braydyn Gillham attempted just nine passes but completed five for 148 yards and three touchdowns with senior wideout Nick Johnson on the receiving end of back-to-back 34-yard touchdown receptions in the first quarter.  The Jags’ leading receiver, senior D’Warren Simmons, caught the third scoring toss from Gillham in the second quarter.

The Polar Bears struggled in the first half to find any offensive consistency as they were held to 65 yards of total offense by the stingy Hubbard defense.   Frost did not cross midfield a single time over the first two periods and managed just three first downs.

Hubbard’s Brandon Simpson, who led all rushers with 130 yards on seven carries, scored the first and last touchdowns for the Jaguars and also added a third midway through the third quarter.

Logan McClinton, who missed three earlier contests with an injury, added 109 yards on nine carries in his most extensive action in five weeks for Hubbard.

Already up 44-0, Hubbard received the second half kickoff and proceeded to march 80 yards in 12 plays with Simpson covering the final eight yards for his second score of the contest.  The drive consumed over six minutes of the clock with all of the yardage coming on the ground.

On Frost’s first series of the second half, Hubbard junior defensive lineman Bryan Walker scooped up a fumble and rumbled 31 yards toward paydirt being dragged down at the Frost 1-yard line.   The Polar Bears made a valiant goal line stand before Henderson scored on a 1-yard plunge on fourth down to make it 58-0 with 3:19 left in the third.

With the final period played in a driving rain, Frost put together a promising eight-play drive after Hubbard’s only turnover of the contest.  The Polar Bears crossed into Jaguar territory behind the strong running of senior Robert Worley for the first time in the contest only to see the drive stall out on a failed fourth down conversion at the Hubbard 21-yard line.

Three plays later, Simpson sprinted 63 yards down the right sideline on his way to his third touchdown of the game to close out the scoring with the Jaguars claiming a 64-0 victory.

With win, Hubbard improves to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play while Frost drops to 3-4 and 0-1 in league play.  The Jaguars’ only loss this season came in a non-district 36-35 overtime loss on the road at Bosqueville.
