Navarro football: Navarro 42, Blinn 28

BRENHAM —      Navarro got the victory it needed, though it wasn’t without a few tense moments in the second half.

The Bulldogs raced to a 21-point first-half lead, Blinn rallied to tie the game in the third period and Navarro responded by grinding out a pair of fourth quarter scores for a 42-28 win Saturday at Cub Stadium.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Navarro can clinch a playoff berth next Saturday when it hosts Northeastern Oklahoma at 1 p.m. Blinn is now 4-5 and 2-3 and effectively out of the playoff picture.

Navarro jumped to a 21-0 lead with TD runs of 2 and 59 yards by Tim Wright and Aaron Shaw’s 15-yard return of a blocked punt.

After Darrion Landry caught a 29-yard pass from quarterback Logan Vinklarek midway in the second quarter, Navarro’s Cameron Washington scored the first of his two touchdowns for a 28-7 Navarro lead at the break.

Blinn then went on a scoring spree in the third quarter with touchdown runs by Kyle Fulks, Klartel Claridy and Garry Kimble.

Now tied at 28, the Bulldogs responded with a nine-play, 65-yard drive that covered 3:36 of the fourth period and ending with a 9-yard Washington scoring run.

Following a Blinn turnovers, Wright scored for the third time, this time sweeping right on a 16-yard scoring jaunt with 6:43 remaining, effectively sealing the game.

Wright led all rushers with 167 yards and 26 carries. Washington added 110 yards on 27 totes. Starting quarterback Carson Earp completed 5 of 15 passes for 51 yards.

Navarro’s defense was buoyed by an outstanding game from linebacker Chip Jones, who recorded 10 tackles, including one sack and three tackles for loss.

Cornerback Sherman Gilbert set up Wright’s second touchdown of the first half with a 51-yard fumble return.

“I've got no gas left. I'm out,'' said Anderson, a senior lefty who stopped Cayuga cold, holding the three-time defending district champs to just three singles while striking out 14.
