Hunter Hawkins blew away the field, and this could just be the first step for the Blooming Grove senior, who won the District 23-2A boys cross country title and helped lead the Lions to the boys team title as well.
Blooming Grove will send its entire boys and girls cross country teams to the region meet next week in Humble.
The Lions won the district meet with an impressive 22 point total and the Lady Lions had a low score of 39 and finished second to Teague (27).
Rice’s boys team finished second and Mildred’s girls team finished third to qualify for the region meet.
The top three teams and the top 10 individuals advance to the region meet.
Hawkins led the way with a winning time of 17:27.5. Blooming Grove’s Daniel Pelzel was third (18:06.6), and Blooming Grove’s Nathan Klander was fourth (18:13.9). BG’s Cole Harris and Tyler Baumgartner, finished sixth and eighth as the Lions had their top five or top five .
The Blooming Grove girls were led by Jesse Devries, who finished fifth and Kim Mack, who was sixth. Mildred’s Allison Hierholzer finished ninth and Maddie Moore was 10th to lead the Lady Eagles.
Erin Derden led Rice with a seventh place finish.
The Rice boys were led by Reece Whit, who was the district runnerup behind Hawkins. He ran a 17:58.0.
Rice’s Conner Roberts (fifth), Frank Robles (ninth), John Zeller (13th) and Bryan Aguirre ((16th) rounded out the top five for the Bulldogs.
