O’Sullivan sets state PAT record as Mildred plays like Mildred in 51-6 win

MILDRED — On a night that really belonged to Devin O’Sullivan, Mildred looked like Mildred again.

O’Sullivan, a senior kicker, broke the state’s extra point record in a 51-6 route of Dallas Oak Cliff Life at Asby Field. But it was team effort after two subpar weeks that allowed Mildred to clinch a Golden Circle best ninth-straight playoff appearance.

Mildred can share the District 6-2A DII title with a win over Scurry-Rosser next week.

The Eagles (7-2, 5-1 in district) forced six turnovers and held Life (2-7, 2-4) to 158 yards. Five different Eagles scored, led by O’Sullivan, who booted extra point No. 260 after returning a fumble 79 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring.

When the night ended, he had five more, running his career total to 265. The previous state record was held for almost four seasons by Southlake Carroll’s Cade Foster (263, 2006-’09), who now handles placekicking duties for the University of Alabama.

“It’s unbelievable,” said O’Sullivan, who added another fumble recovery that led to a TD and a 30-yard field. “I wish it would have come against Tolar, but I knew it was coming.”

Two weeks ago, O’Sullivan was six shy of tying Foster entering a home matchup with Tolar that the Rattlers dominated. O’Sullivan never got to attempt a PAT in a 49-0 loss. Last week he was perfect — and the difference — in a 14-13 win at Rice to move to within four of tying.

Friday, he nailed his fourth in the second quarter after a 45-yard Will Burnham to Mikey Muncy touchdown pass with 2:11 left in the half, getting a mention from the PA announcer and a rousing cheer from the crowd after tying the record.

Midway through the third, he recovered his second fumble, and three plays later Draylon Sterling took a lead draw 56 yards for a touchdown, setting up the record-breaking boot. O’Sullivan’s family was presented the ball.

O’Sullivan’s seventh attempt of the night was blocked after a low snap. That happened on a few of the earlier occasions, but Burnham — who has been holding in the absence of the injured Connor Hill — made sure O’Sullivan had a shot at history.

“A couple of them bounced and he scooped them off the ground,” O’Sullivan said. He’s done a good job.”

Burnham had one of four interceptions for the Eagles, returning it 80 yards to set up a 15-yard Kyle Roach touchdown run. Russell Holden returned one of his two interceptions 37 yards for a score to make it 14-0 in the second, and Trent Cecil returned another 53 yards to set up a 12-yard Muncy scamper for six.

Sterling also had an 11-yard touchdown run, and now has 91 career TDs.

Sixty-two of Life’s total yards came on a late second quarter touchdown drive.
