Mildred had its chances to possibly unseat undefeated Scurry-Rosser, create a three-way tie for first, and maybe even claim the district’s top seed headed into the playoffs. The problem with chances is you have to capitalize them.
The Eagles did not.
Scurry-Rosser pulled away in the second half of a 27-7 win over Mildred Friday night at Wildcat Field.
The Eagles had four turnovers, did not cause one, and squandered several drives deep into Scurry-Rosser territory as they fell to 7-3, 5-2 in District 6-2A DII. Mildred will go into the playoffs as the third-seed, and will play the Nocona-Henrietta winner, likely at Fort Worth Brewer, next Friday.
Scurry-Rosser, meanwhile, which lost the last two years to Mildred by a combined score of 160-0, finished off a perfect regular season at 10-0, 7-0.
Paten Snell threw for two touchdowns – both to Jalen Blanton – and Rodney Sample ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns as Scurry-Rosser had 328 yards of offense.
Mildred got a first-quarter, 8-yard touchdown run from Draylon Sterling to tie the game, 7-7, but the Eagles sputtered the rest of the night. They had 158 yards after the first 12 minutes of play, and had 143 yards rushing at the intermission using a combination of quarterbacks in regular and “wildcat” sets.
But the Wildcat was abandoned in the second half, as Mildred ran 14 times for 12 yards. The Eagles finished with 284 yards, only 71 after the half.
In an explosive first quarter, the teams combined for 21 points and 350 yards. The Wildcats owned a 14-7 lead, and had two big plays for scores.
Scurry-Rosser won the toss, and with that explosive offense, took the ball. On the second play, Snell zipped a screen between the hands of Muncy, who jumped the route and would have had an open field the other way had he come down with the interception. Instead, Blanton made the catch, slipped several would-be-tacklers and raced 50 yards to put the Wildcats up, 7-0.
Mildred drove to the Scurry-Rosser 22 on its first drive, getting 44 yards from Sterling on four carries. That drive ended in a 38-yard Devin O’Sullivan field goal attempt that was just wide left.
Sterling ended with 85 yards on 23 carries, with his last 14 carries going for four yards. He came into the game needing 114 yards for 1,000.
On the Wildcats’ next drive, the Eagles forced a three-and-out, a rare feat in a quarter that saw Scurry-Rosser gain 192 yards, and answered with a quick 70-yard drive to tie the game. On third-and-2, Muncy replaced Will Burnham at quarterback, and took a run 30 yards into Scurry-Rosser territory. On second and 3, Muncy went another 15 to the Wildcats’ 10, and two plays later, Sterling moved to quarterback and took the snap and went straight up the middle untouched for 8 yards and the tie, 7-7.
Mildred gained further momentum when Dylan Foster let the subsequent kickoff near the sideline glance off his foot and out of bounds at the Wildcats’ 10. On first-and-10, Snell went for eight to give Scurry-Rosser some room, and on second down Sample took a handoff off-tackle right, found the sideline and outran a still-hobbled Sterling to the end zone. Snell’s second PAT made it 14-7 with 5:08 left in the first.
After that, both defenses showed up to play. Mildred held Scurry-Rosser to 25 yards on 13 plays in the second quarter. Mildred had 55 yards in the second quarter, but lost its second fumble on one drive, and couldn’t score on another nine-play, 66-yard drive that stalled at the Scurry-Rosser 5.
