GC Baseball: Unbelievable - Windthorst plates 6 in seventh to stun Dawson

WEATHERFORD — Bo Moore lives by the run. He likes to put pressure on the opponent. A three-run seventh looked like just enough cushion in a five-run game.

But it wasn’t.

Windthorst scored six runs, five with two outs, to steal a 7-6 win from Dawson in Game 1 of the Region II-1A seminfinals at Weatherford College.

Game 2 is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Weatherford College.

Dawson led 6-1 after Dalton Long drove in two runs in the top of the inning, and later scored on a wild pitch and throwing error. It looked like plenty.

Dawson starter Trent Underwood, who was at an efficient 70 pitches through six innings, got a quick out in the seventh. Michael Wolf’s triple gave Windthorst (27-14) some life, and an error ended up hurting the Bulldogs (20-8), because Underwood struck out the next batter.

He would not register the last out, and neither would reliever Louis Lachney, who came on with runners on the corners in a 6-5 game. Lachney balked in the tying run, but only after the umpires convened after Scott Belcher questioned a move Lachney made on the mound. Not one of the four umpires flinched when Lachney took his foot off the rubber initially.

Then, DH Derek Mankins, who was 0 for 3 before the at bat, singled sharply to left to drive in the winning run. The last five runs were unearned.

The game had been all Dawson before.

After getting nothing on four at bats with runners in scoring position in the first two frames, Dawson capitalized in the fourth. The Bulldogs broke through, scoring a trio of runs on four hits and a sacrifice, two of which were safety squeeze plays. Lane Dotson and Jared Gray had RBI hits in the inning.

They took advantage of a bad throw home on the first squeeze, but had another out at home when Dotson hesitated just enough before breaking from third. But the Bulldogs also had two questionable outs on the bases in the inning. Gray appeared to be safe at second, and Louis Lachney was out at first after Windthorst first baseman’s MacAully Bowen’s stretch for a wide throw appeared to pull him of the bag.

Windthorst answered a half-inning later, plating a run on two hits.

Dawson threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs without the benefit of a hit. After Windthorst starter Kellen Green hit nine-hole hitter Seth Lachney to load them, leading to a visit from Belcher, Gray lined a deep fly ball down the left line. It looked like it would clear the bases, butWolf ran it down, making a running catch fully stretch out to end the inning. It saved three runs, and kept the Trojans close at 3-1.
