CHS Baseball: Tigers lose to Nacogdoches 4-1

Corsicana — In a battle for first place in the District16-4A race, Nacogdoches and pitcher Brigham Hill stopped Corsicana’s Tigers 4-1 Friday to take over the lead in the district with a 6-1 record. The Tigers are now 5-2 and face Lindale, which is also 5-2, at Price Field on Tuesday night to try to gain ground in a tough district race.

Nacogdoches, which suffered its only district loss in Corsicana last month 7-3, will travel to play Whitehouse as the teams head into the stretch run with just three games left in the regular season.

Hill, a Texas A&M commit, gave up five hits and had some help from his defense. Corsicana had  five outs on the bases, including three at home plate.

Trevor Nolen pitched well enough to win, giving up three runs on five hits over four innings. DJ Minniear closed out the game, but the Tigers never led. Nacogdoches scored a run in the first and another in the third on two clutch two-out RBI hits. The Tigers got their leadoff hitter on in the sixth and seventh but couldn’t score

Corsicana (18-6) cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when Layton Wolver walked, stole second (he is now 24 for 24 in stolen bases this season) and then scored on Joe Vasquez’s two-out single down the right field line. Vasquez went 2 for 3, Wolver went 1 for 2 and walked, and Billy Harlan went 1 for 3.
