Blooming Grove junior Desiree Wiggins took fourth place in her weight division Saturday at the State Girls Powerlifting Meet in Corpus Christi.
Wiggins, who lifted in the 105-pound division, totalled 640 pounds. She squatted 250 pounds, benched 130, and dead-lifted 260.
“She did a good job and she did her best total of the year,” Lions powerlifting coach Junior Williams said.
Wiggins was 11th at state last year, so she moved up seven spots in the weight class.
The other four in the Top 5 were all seniors and all had placed last year at the state meet.
“I don’t think anyone was expecting her to come up and do what she did,” Williams said. “She worked hard. From January to spring break, she never missed one day. She was determined to come home with a medal and she did it.”
Now Wiggins can look forward to next year, when she will be a favorite in her weight class.
“She knows it,” Williams said. “The bull’s eye will be on here, but she’s ready for the challenge.”
