Hubbard wins district title, beats Meridian 58-0

HUBBARD - — The Hubbard Jaguars clinched their second consecutive district title with a 58-0 shutout over the visiting Meridian Yellowjackets at Jaguar Field.   Just two seasons ago, the Jaguars finished 0-10 but have now claimed back-to-back district crowns.

Hubbard (8-2, 4-0) jumped out to a 30-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Jaguars used a suffocating defense and relentless ground game to pound out their third shutout win in their last three district contests.

The Jags defense limited Meridian (2-8, 1-3) to 56 yards of total offense and just two first downs.  Meanwhile, Hubbard got 195 yards and four scores on 15 carries from senior RB Bradley Walker and 86 yards and another touchdown from junior QB Casen Martin as the Jags rolled up 433 yards on the ground.  Five different players scored for Hubbard as Coach Craig Horn substituted liberally in the second half.

Going into the contest, Hubbard was already assured of 9-1A’s top seed in the playoffs due to their earlier 44-27 win over second place Frost. The Jags have a bye the first week of postseason play and will face the winner of a Bremond-Evadale matchup the week of Thanksgiving.

The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
