NC Softball: Bulldogs sweep TVCC Saturday

The Navarro Bulldogs put together clutch hits to pull out a doubleheader sweep over the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals at the Jesse and Lou Cummings Field Saturday afternoon.

In the opening game, coach Jessica Karenke Burke's team won 5-3, and in Game 2 won, 3-2, on a walk-off single to improve to 27-16 overall and 13-5 in conference play.

“They are a tough team and they put pressure on us,” Burke said. “We had some girls come through at the plate and it was a good team win for us.”

In the opening game of the series, the Bulldogs scored four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off starting pitcher Kimberly Leschber and reliever Kayla Cosby.

T.J. Smith opened up with a single, followed by a single from Corinne Brassell and a bunt single from Mason Grubbs to load the bases.

Jessica Marshburn then roped a two RBI double to tie the game up at 3-3. Later in the inning, Jade Havard hit an RBI sacrifice-fly and Cristal Lopez drove in Marshburn to give them the 5-3 lead.

TVCC opened up the scoring off starting pitcher Kaycee Spears with a solo home run over the left centerfield fence for the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, TVCC added two more runs on an RBI single from Candise Wise that scored Marci Seymour and a RBI double from Chyna Phipps for a 3-1 lead.

Navarro was led at the plate by Mo Miller, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Teammate T.J. Smith went 2 for 3 in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2, Brassell smacked the walk-off single off TVCC starting pitcher Cosby — which plated Daniele Nash and courtesy runner Kelsey Villasenor for the game-winning run.

“I think it is a big night for everybody really,” Burke said. “The region is the toughest it has ever been in the 13 years that I have been here. One game away from first and third, I think that shows a lot about how tough our region is and it is a tough race for everybody.

“I've got no gas left. I'm out,'' said Anderson, a senior lefty who stopped Cayuga cold, holding the three-time defending district champs to just three singles while striking out 14.
