Navarro’s baseball season came to an end Sunday in Lufkin, where the Bulldogs were knocked out of the Region XIV Tournament by Angelina, which came from behind to beat Navarro 11-4.
The Bulldogs led 4-0 after putting up a four-spot in the third, but couldn’t hang on and lost their second game in two days in the double-elimination tournament to finish their season at 31-22.
Navarro entered the tournament with a lot of momentum after winning 11 of its last 13 regular season games and sweeping top-seeded Paris in a three-game series to top off the regular season.
The Bulldogs fell to Blinn 7-2 on Saturday, which dropped them into the win or go home loser’s bracket. They took an early lead in the third on Sunday when Grayson Lewis, who had three hits, and Hunter Seales, who led off the third with a single, both scored on Javon Hernandez’s double. J.P. Phillips scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0 and Mason Hesse had an RBI single.
But Angelina starter Tanner Griggs settled down and picked up the win, holding Navarro to six hits over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked six.
Corsicana grad Holden Grounds took the loss. He went six innings and gave up six runs (only three were earned as Navarro made three errors in the game) on seven hits. He struck out six and walked five.
Angelina knotted the score with a four-run fourth, scored a run in the sixth and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh that included a two-run homer from Aaron Clemons, who drove in four runs for the Roadrunners. Remey Reed, who pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up four of those runs before giving way to Corsicana grad Heath Donica, who gave up a run in the eighth.
