GC Softball: BG, Mildred, Rice land stars on 23-AA All-District team

Corsicana — Blooming Grove, Mildred and Rice all landed players on the District 23-AA all-district softball team that was announced recently.

The Blooming Grove Lady Lions had three players earn superlatives and Mildred's Taylor White, a freshman who emerged as the ace of the staff, was voted the Newcomer of the Year.

Blooming Grove ace Falcon Thompson and BG catcher Steely Southard are arguably one of the best batteries in all of AA, and both seniors were recognized as two of the best in the district.

Thompson was a unanimous choice as the district's Pitcher of the Year and Southard, one of the  top catchers in this part of Texas, was voted the league's Offensive MVP.

Thompson went 16-10 on the mound with a 1.74 ERA. She hurled five shutouts and struck out 171 batters in 141 innings. She also batted .457 with a homer and 27 RBI's.

Southard was a team leader behind the plate and batted .586 with two homers while driving in 27 runs. She had a .743 slugging percentage and also stole 21 bases while keeping base stealers at bay with her rifle arm.

Blooming Grove junior Sidney Horner was voted the district Defensive MVP as the Lady Lions captured three of the top superlatives in the district. Horner had a .968 fielding average, and was a force at the plate, batting .626. She stole 38 bases and scored 56 runs to lead BG in both categories.

White was a money pitcher for the Lady Eagles, who had four players named to the first team. Morgan McCreary was the district's first-team catcher and shortstop Callie Bland, and outfielders Maddie Moore and Aubyn Turner also made the first team. Mildred's Savannah Pritchett Abbey Burnham, Ally Ayers and Lauren Hawkins were named to the second team.

Rice's Samantha Harris, Ashton Metcalf and Hannah Owens made the first team and Rice's Rebecca Alsup and Olivia Zellar made the second team.

Blooming Grove's Rachel East and Mariah Horner made the first team, and Brittany Nichols, Katie Hayden and Danielle Lima were named to the second team.

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.
