All-Golden Circle Softball titles honor those lost

Daily Sun announces its 2013 GC Softball team

Corsicana — On Memorial Day in 2000, as I prepared to coach a little league baseball game in Rice, my phone rang. Dale Gosser, former Daily Sun sports editor and now the managing editor in Cleburne, labored on the other end.

“Krista Armstrong died today,” he told me. She had passed away after an accident involving a vehicle.

I had just covered several of the Blooming Grove sophomore’s playoff games. She played catcher. Well. She had a feisty demeanor, and she refused to cheat the game by playing it the right way, hard, full-bore.

With the blessing of then-Daily Sun Publisher Gary Connor, we renamed our annual Golden Circle Player of the Year award for Krista, who had been a first-team All-Golden Circle volleyball and softball player that year.

Unfortunately, three and a half years later, our sports department found itself facing a similar tragedy. Heather Holland, a sophomore at Rice, was killed in a car accident on Nov. 7, 2003 traveling to pitching practice in Corsicana. In the spring, she went 10-5 with a 1.40 ERA for the Lady Bulldogs, earned the school’s first-ever playoff victory on the mound, and landed on the All-Golden Circle first-team.

Again, we saw fit to honor Holland by naming our All-Golden Circle pitcher of the year award for her.

Somewhere along the way, through the numerous departmental changes and computer crashes, those two names fell off of the marquee. That is unacceptable.

With a lot of pride in what those two young ladies stood for, we are pleased to bring their names back to the 2013 All-Golden Circle team. To the two Olivia’s, Farmer and Curtis, who now have their names associated with Krista and Heather, let me assure you both it’s an honor.

Krista and Heather were standard setters. Gamers. Worthy of being remembered each spring for what they accomplished.
