Mildred forces 3rd-place game, beats Blooming Grove 51-28

MILDRED — Olivia Farmer scored 14 points and Maddie Moore added 10 points as Mildred clinched at least a third-place tie in 23-2A with a 51-28 victory over Blooming Grove on Tuesday night.

Mildred (17-10, 7-5) will play Marlin in a third-place playoff game on Friday night in Normangee.

Hannah Southard led Blooming Grove with seven points.

Frost 80, Aquilla 26: Morgan Elmore scored 17 points and Dakota Lassetter, Kadee Bowling and Jae Moore each had 13 points as Frost rolled to an 80-26 victory over Aquilla on Tuesday night.  

Kerens 82, Dawson 13: Breanna Wells scored 26 points as district leader Kerens rolled to a 82-13 victory over Dawson to finish the district season with a perfect 10-0 record.

Hubbard 64, Cross Roads 58: Dallas Fletcher scored 17 points and Nakaila Banks had 16 points as Hubbard beat Cross Roads 64-58.

Cayuga 82, Wortham 63: Cayuga beat Wortham 82-63 on Tuesday night to clinch second place in 18-1A Division I.


Kerens 82, Dawson 23: Tobyus Thomas scored 16 points and Nate Betts had 14 as Kerens (18-6, 7-1) walloped Dawson 82-23 to clinch at least second place in 18-1A Division I.

Frost 63, Aquilla 31: Danial Steels scored 25 points and Jacob Stroder had 17 as Frost remained perfect in 19-1A DII with a win over Aquilla.

Marlin 55, Rice 33: Austin Peppers and Daniel Arteaga each scored six points in Rice’s 55-33 loss to Marlin.

    Mayper's real message is that life at Navarro is all about winning, and all about a culture that expects to win.
    “We expect to win them all. If you don't, you're in the wrong business,'' Mayper said. “I think our kids expect it, too.''

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.

    His father was a head coach for years at Pecos High and his brother-in-law is the head football coach at DeSoto, but Lawrence Williams Jr., a man who loves coaching football, never had any ideas about being the head man.
    “I love coaching,'' said Williams as he sat at his desk in Blooming Grove, where he became the Lions' head coach this summer. “I just never thought about being the head coach and I never applied to be a head coach. With this job I can still coach.''
