Mildred boys gain revenge from earlier loss, beat Blooming Grove 73-52

MILDRED — They're all even now.

Mildred gained its revenge for a loss in Blooming Grove earlier this season, blitzing the Lions 73-52 Tuesday night in a must-win game for both teams.

Mildred shot the ball well and used a balanced attack with four scorers hitting double figures to position itself for a playoff spot. Blooming Grove likely dropped out of the race with the loss.

Mildred (10-5, 7-4) moved into a third-place tie for third-place with Buffalo (18-10, 7-4). Blooming Grove fell to 17-9 and 5-5 in district play.

Nic Shimonek, who was held to 14 points in BG, led all scorers with 22 points Tuesday night. He made five 3-pointers. Mikey Muncy scored 16 points while Johnathan Harrison had 14 points and Connor Hill had 13.

Juanya Pyburn had 22 points and Daniel Pelzel had eight for the Lions.

Mildred guard Connor Hill opened the game with two 3-pointers and made a long 2-pointer at the halftime buzzer to highlight an entertaining first half.

Hill helped Mildred start the game with an 8-2 lead. Blooming Grove's Tyler Ellis tied the game at 12-12 with a 3-pointer with 3:37 to go in the first half.

Shimonek made a 3-pointer for a 17-12 lead late in the first quarter and the Eagles never trailed the rest of the game.

He made two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Mildred lead swelled to 20-plus points.

Harrison scored eight points in the fourth quarter and had a monster dunk that drew a loud applause from the Mildred fans.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
