CHS Boys Hoops: Tigers fade late against Dragons, 53-43

Corsicana misses chance to clinch playoff berth

The Tigers missed out on a chance to clinch a playoff spot Friday night in the Piney Woods. They'll get another chance against Lindale on Tuesday.

The Tigers led briefly in the second half, but couldn't withstand Nacogdoches' press in a 53-43 loss on Friday night that leaves Corsicana in a fourth-place tie with the Dragons.

Corsicana (21-10, 3-6) can still clinch a playoff spot with a win at home against Lindale coupled with a Whitehouse win over Nacogdoches. If both Corsicana and Nacodogches win or lose, they'll have a fourth place playoff game later enxt week. The only way the Tigers can be eliminated from the playoffs is they loss and Nacogdoches wins.

The Tigers led briefly in the third quarter, 28-26, on a layup by Ernest McGhee midway through the third quarter. But Austin Willeford scored 10 straight points to give the Dragons an eight-point lead and the Tigers were behind the rest of the game.

Corsicana did pull within 51-48 with two minutes left in the game, and Mike Lewis missed a 3-pointer to tie. Willeford answered by making a 3-pointer for a 6-point lead and the Tigers never recovered.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
