GC Basketball: Roundup: Kerens boys come back to beat Hubbard, Frost sweeps, Rice boys win

Corsicana — The Kerens Bobcats, after dropping the District 18-1A Division I opener Friday night, bounced back to defeat the Hubbard Jaguars, 54-41, in a key district tilt.  Dustin Jock hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Bobcats outscored Hubbard 23-10 to overcome an early 10-point Jaguar lead. Nate Betts led Kerens with 17 points to lead all scorers for the night.

Also adding to the Bobcat cause were Shelton Sayles (7 points), Brandon Ward (4),  DeQuaylon Devins (3), Dontarias Bryant (3), Hunter Green (3), Jake Moss (2),  and Rayvon Faulk (2).  Hubbard was led by Jordan Johnson with 12 points and Casen Martin with 11. Other scorers for the Jaguars were D’Warren Simmons (8 points), Bradyn Gillham (6), Brian Walker (2), and Trey Henderson (2).


Frost 63, Mt. Calm 43

Frost took control early, outscoring Mt. Calm 32-19 in the first half, as the Polar Bears improved to 5-1 in District 19A Division II play with a 63-43 road win over the Panthers.  Frost then used a big third quarter, increasing the lead to 55-28, to put the game away.  

Zach Terry, with 17 points, and Isiah Belcher, who added 15 points, led the way for the Polar Bears.  Frost, which improved to 9-6 on the season, also got points from Kobe Hailey (8), Ryan Worley (8), Tyler Stevenson (7), Robert Worley (4), and Colton Clayton (2).  

Rice 61, Riesel 37

Behind 33 points from freshman Sim Nezar, the Rice Bulldogs broke a four-game losing streak, beating the Riesel Indians on the road, 61-37, in District 23-2A action.

The Bulldogs used big second and third quarters, outscoring Riesel 35-18, to take control and earn their first district win. Others scoring for the Bulldogs included Raven Huffman (12 points), Daniel Arteaga (6), Colin Haston (5), Austin Peppers (2), Conner Roberts (2), and Nik Costlow (1).

Mt. Calm 13

Diana Rios dropped in 26 points as the Frost Lady Bears easily outpaced the Mt. Calm Lady Panthers on the road Tuesday night.  Frost, after leading by 21 after the first quarter, increased the lead to 41 by halftime, leading 44-3 at the break. Jae Moore, with 13 points, was the only other Lady Bear to post double digits, as ten Frost players got into the scoring column. Also scoring for the Lady Bears were Madison Revill (9 points), Heather Montgomery (8), Karlie Scott (6), Kaycee Bowling (5), Jennifer Andrews (3), Kennah Kennedy (2), Cheyenne Pack (2), and Jacelyn Roberts (2).

Frost, ranked No. 3 in latest TGCA Class 1A Division II poll, improves to 17-2 on the season, while remaining a perfect 8-0 in District 19A D-II play.

Wortham 61, Dawson 35

Despite 12 points from senior Kaylee Martinez, the Dawson Lady Bulldogs fell to Wortham in a home District 18-1A contest, 61-35. Others contributing for Dawson included Stephany Lindsey (9 points), Courtney Warren (6), Jalyn Miller (4), Katie Yates (2), and Jacie Henderson (2).
