HS Football Playoffs: Mildred physical in 44-14 victory over Clarksville (UPDATED with playoff confirmation, comments)

After Mildred scored to open the third, Forte was leveled by Barlow for a three-yard loss on Clarksville’s first play of the second half. His final three carries went for -3, -3 and -4.

“The past two weeks our front four guys have done a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage and making plays,” Harvell said.

Ballard’s second pick set up a 33-yard drive, one that ended with a 12-yard Shimonek sprint as he held his ground in the pocket on third-and-7, then bolted to the end zone at the last minute as Michael Turner closed in on him.

Clarksville answered quickly with another Tinnell-to-Scales strike, but Mildred was able to deny the Blue Tigers the rest of the night.

Mildred’s final score came on a fourth-and-5 as Shimonek found Muncy on a trailing route from 17 yards away with 2:44 to go in the game.

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.

His father was a head coach for years at Pecos High and his brother-in-law is the head football coach at DeSoto, but Lawrence Williams Jr., a man who loves coaching football, never had any ideas about being the head man.
“I love coaching,'' said Williams as he sat at his desk in Blooming Grove, where he became the Lions' head coach this summer. “I just never thought about being the head coach and I never applied to be a head coach. With this job I can still coach.''
