Corsicana — It took a couple of extra innings, but Blooming Grove claimed its second-straight win of the young softball season Tuesday night. The Lady Lions rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to defeat the Hillsboro Lady Eagles, 6-3.
Senior pitcher Falcon Thompson struck out 19 batters to lead Blooming Grove (2-0). She gave up no earned runs on five hits, after allowing only one hit through the first five innings.
With the game tied in the top of the ninth, Thompson singled and then took second and third on passed balls. Brittany Nichols singled to third, and then stole second, allowing Thompson to score on a double-steal for the go-ahead run.
But the Lady Lions weren't finished. Rachel East and Katie Haden both reached on fielder's choices, allowing Nichols to cross home plate. East scored on a passed ball and Haden scored on Cassie Morgan's triple to the right-center field fence. Mariah Horner then doubled to center to drive in Morgan.
Junior catcher Sidney Horner had the hot bat for the Lady Lions, turning in a 2-for-4 performance. She singled over third base, stole second and then scored on Danielle Lima's RBI-bunt single in the top of the sixth.
Hillsboro scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.
Blooming Grove resumes action Thursday in the Waco Invitational Tournament.
