GC Softball/Baseball: Roundup (Adds Dawson baseball)

Corsicana's softball team rips Tyler 19-0

Corsicana — Corsicana's Tiger softball team destroyed John Tyler 19-0 on Tuesday night, sending Tyler back to East Texas after only five innings.

Corsicana scored four runs in the first inning and 15 in the bottom of the second and then coasted home in the lopsided game.

The Tigers improved to 5-2 in the District 16-4A race and are all but guaranteed a spot in the playoffs with three games left.

Jourdan Bruce had a lead-off single single to start the rout and Skylar Kirk's double scored Bruce. Sidney Kirk knocked in Skylar Kirk.

Leeah Seth reached base on an error by the left fielder to score Sidney Kirk and Ashley Spence drove home Seth for the fourth run.

After a big shutdown inning, Corsicana scored 15 times on a combination of hits and hit by pitches from Bruce, Skylar Kirk, Sidney Kirk, Seth, Logan Melton and Chelsea Vandiver. Sidney Kirk pitched the five-inning shutout and struck out 11 to get the win.

Italy 4, Frost 3

The Lady Polar Bears suffered their first loss of the season to district rival Italy, which is now 4-2 in the District 19-1A race, a game behind Frost (5-1).

Frost is 9-1 for the season but can wrap up the district title if the Lady Polar Bears run the table.

Frost led 3-0 after three innings, but Italy had a three-run fourth inning and broke the 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh.

Jae Moore, who is now 9-1 for the season, took the loss on the mound. She gave up only three hits. Moore went 1 for 3 and drove in a run in Frost's three-run third inning.

Karlie Scott went 2 for 4 and had a two-run homer to account for Frost's other runs. Hillaree Schwartz went 3 for 3 and scored a run and Kaycee Bowling went 1 for 4 with a double for Frost.


Kerens 13, LaPoyner 3 (5)

The first-place Bobcats improved to 10-1 in the District 18-1A race with another one-sided win on the road.

Mitchell Solis went 2 for 2 with a double, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead the way. Aaron Foxworth went 1 for 3 and scored twice and Brent Warren went 1 for 2 and scored twice. Brett Anderson went 1 for and scored three times and Shelton Sayles went 1 for 4 and scored once.

Dustin Jock went the five-inning distance to get the win. He gave up two hits and two earned runs and struck out eight.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
