GC Baseball/Softball: Roundup -- Blooming Grove edges Mildred 1-0 (Adds Dawson-Hubbard baseball)

CHS softball team beats Lindale, 3-1, to have chance at district title

Corsicana — Blooming Grove kept its baseball playoff hopes alive, winning a pitcher’s duel, 1-0, in Mildred Tuesday night. Dalton Blake struck out 11 and scattered five hits in a well-pitched game that took an hour and a half to complete.

Mildred’s Justin Jenkins matched Blake, allowing four hits and fanning five. He allowed an unearned run in the fourth, when the Eagles committed all three of their errors in the game. It marked the second season in a row Blooming Grove won in Mildred, and it moved the Lions to 3-6 in District 23-2A. Mildred, which fell to 5-5, would have clinched a playoff spot with a win.

Blake struck out the side in the fifth, and only allowed two runners to reach third. In the second, Will Burnham blistered a one-out triple to deep centerfield, but a pair of strikeouts – sandwiched around a walk – stranded him. In the sixth, Jase Butler had a one-out double after the ball popped out of the glove of diving left fielder Jarod Obenour, and he stole third with two outs. He was stranded after Blake’s 10th strikeout.

Blooming Grove had a chance to score in the first, but Brody Owens was gunned down at home on a single to right by Obenour. In the third, Blake had a two-out double, and it was the only time outside the first the Lions advanced a runner to second, except in the fifth.

In that inning, Jacob Williams reached on an error, and on a sacrifice bunt was doubled up as he tried to go third. With two outs, Owens squibbed a basehit down the first-base line as Jenkins tried to backhand the ball to first. Obenour then reached on an error, and another error on the throw to third to get Owens went to the fence, allowing Owens to score.

Jenkins struck out the side in the second.
