Smooth sailing for Stormi

Corsicana — Nerves?

Forget about it.

College scouts?

Don’t worry, just play your game.

That’s what Dawson’s Stormi Matthews did on Wednesday at the Scout.com regional National Showcase Softball Tournament at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, where a number of college scouts were on hand.

“Honestly, I wasn’t nervous,’’ said Matthews, who just finished her junior year at Dawson High School. “I was just kind of excited to play.’

It showed.

Matthews, who was considered one of the top 40 outfielders in this region of the country by Scout.com., went 2-for-4 at the plate and made several good plays in the outfield in the tournament.

“I thought I would be nervous, but I told myself to just have fun and play my game and that there was no reason to be nervous,’’ Matthews said.

Matthews is coming off a big year at Dawson High School, where she hit .337. She was Dawson’s ace on the mound and had a 2.44 ERA with 78 strikeouts. She capped off her season by being named to the District 11-1A all-district first-team.

Matthews participated in a regional showcase for Scout.com in Flower Mound on March 30, and based on her performance at that event she was invited to this week’s national showcase in Cedar Hill.

“I was exited and honored to get invited to play,’’ Matthews said. “There was quite a bit of pressure because there were a lot of talented girls out there. But the better the competition, the better I feel I can play. It makes you play harder.’’

She came away with a new perspective.

“The whole experience was good,’’ she said. “Just seeing the other girls. It helps my confidence that I can play at the collegiate level, which is what I want to do. It helps me better myself.’’
