GC Baseball: Mildred’s Shimonek tosses no-hitter

WACO — Nic Shimonek wasn’t perfect, but he was close. Mildred’s junior right-hander tossed a no-hitter as the Eagles blanked Grandview, 3-0, in the Region II-2A area round playoffs Veterans No. 2 Stadium.

The lightning-quick game took one hour and 20 minutes to complete.

Mildred coach Aaron Tidwell won the flip for a one-game series, and it paid off. Shimonek walked four, including the first two batters of the game, and at one point retired 11 in a row. He struck out eight.

“I told (catcher Daniel) Folsom before the game it was probably the best my arm had felt all year,” Shimonek said. “The ball was jumping in the bullpen.”

Mildred (17-11) will face Sunnyvale next at a site and time to be determined.

Shimonek got all the offense he needed in the fourth, when Mildred plated two runs off Grandview starter Prescott Holloway, who went the distance for the Zebras (22-6).

Eric Lewis went 3 for 3 to lead the Eagles (17-11), driving in an insurance run in the fifth Mildred would not nead.

In the fourth, Mildred appeared to waste a leadoff hit when Lewis failed to get down a sacrifice bunt on three successive pitches, and Mason Rose was picked off first. But after an appeal at first, Lewis was issued a ball for the third pitch, doubled on the next one, and it ignited a two-run inning. Lewis scored on a passed ball, and Raleigh Seilheimer blooped a single over a drawn-in infield to plate Shimonek, who had been intentionally walked.

Shimonek got out of a jam in the first, when he walked the first two hitters. He turned a sacrifice bunt attempt into a fielder’s choice when he got the out at third on a close play. After a balk to move the runners up, he induced a pop-up and a ground out to get leave two on.

He walked runners in the third and seventh, and struck out the side in the second. The game ended on a double play after he had walked the leadoff hitter.

Mildred and Grandview played a few weeks ago in a non-district game, won by the Zebras.

“They beat us 6-1,” Tidwell said, “but we threw guys down in our rotation to get a look at them. I thought they’d have trouble with Shimonek.”
