CHS Softball: Tigers leave opportunities on field in 9-1 playoff loss to Legacy

MANSFIELD —

One look at the final, and it looks like a blowout. For the Tigers, it’s all about missed opportunities.

The Tigers were 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 in a 9-1 loss to Mansfield Legacy. In Game 1 of a best of three Region II-4A bi-district series, they managed only three hits, the same amount freshman Legacy catcher Reagan Wright had.

The difference? Two of Wright’s hits left the park, and her third was a two-RBI triple. She had five RBIs total.

The good news is the Tigers get to live another day. Game 2 is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday, less than 15 hours from the final out in Mansfield.

And it’s on the Tigers’ campus.

“It’s good for us,” Tigers coach Elizabeth Collier said of the quick turnaround. “We know what we need to tweak.”

Down 2-0 after Wright led off with a home run, and Legacy (25-7) added an unearned run later in the first, the Tigers (19-14) finally got on the board in the third. They had left the bases loaded in the second.

Jourdan Bruce’s single to right field plated Sidney Kirk, who had drawn her second of three straight free passes. She was hit the first pitch she saw, and didn’t see a strike until her fourth plate appearance.

It should have been 1-1 at that point, Collier said, but it didn’t matter much after the Broncos batted in the bottom of the fourth.

They tacked on four runs, one unearned, and two on a long home run by Wright to left field. They added three more in the fifth, with Wright again driving in two runs on a triple. First base was open, but the Tigers elected to pitch to her. They got out of the inning on a double play.

Kirk took the loss for the Tigers, scattering eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. Raylee Smithart went the final 2 2/3s. Kendall Potts started and got the win for Legacy, giving up two hits and a run in five innings. She struck out 10, but walked six and hit three.
