Corsicana — Navarro has joined San Jacinto as a team to beat every year at the Region XIV Tournament, which comes up next weekend.

The Bulldogs hope to get a psychological advantage on Monday. They came away with a push instead. Navarro and San Jacinto split a doubleheader, with the Bulldogs winnning the opener, 6-2, and the Gators getting the nightcap, 1-0.

The Bulldogs won the first game behind the pitching of sophomore Gage Curry, who allowed three hits in five shutout innings. Mason Salazar had the big blow on offense with a three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-0 lead. That capped a four-run inning.

Navarro scored in the first inning as Drake Roberts singled, stole second and came home on John Clay Reeves’ RBI single. Salazar made it 2-0 with a RBI single the bottom of the second.

In Game 2, San Jacinto took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI single by JaJuan Arroyo. Otherwise, Navarro starter Zach Hobbs was effective, allowing six hits and striking out four.

The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Drake Roberts led off with a triple. But he didn’t move as Reeves struck out, Tyler Wilson grounded out to the pitcher and Byron Reichstein grounded out to second base.

Navarro splits in Paris: In Paris, Wilson hit a grand slam in each game of a doubleheader, but the Bulldogs had to settle for a split of their twinbill at Paris on Saturday afternoon.

Navarro (38-14, 25-5) had already wrapped on the Eastern Conference title and a No. 1 seed in next week’s regional tournament, won the first game 14-7, then lost 13-12 in the nightcap as Paris scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Wilson’s grand slam in Game 1 came in the fourth inning and gave the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead and capped a five-run inning. Wilson also had a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Reeves and Kevin Meredith also had home runs as Navarro slugged 15 hits.

In Game 2, Wilson cranked his grand slam in the second inning with one out as the Bulldogs built a 7-2 lead. Navarro went ahead 9-2 in the third inning on an RBI double by Drake Roberts, but Paris rallied to tie the game at 9-9 after five against Bulldogs starter Chad Young and relievers J.D. Hammer and Jack Moffitt.

The teams traded two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Paris won it on an RBI single by Cline Andrews with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
