WACO —

The Salado Lady Eagles scored five runs in the third inning and held off two Mildred rallies to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three area round playoff series with an 8-3 victory on Friday.
Mildred should have been out of the inning down 1-0 but two costly errors and a triple helped Salado score four more runs and build a lead that was too much for Mildred to overcome.
After the third inning, the Mildred Lady Eagles settled down and played much better ball but Salado had several key defensive plays to end Mildred's threats.
Joanna Tapley led Mildred at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Olivia Farmer was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Lady Eagles. Callie Bland, Maddie Moore, Morgan McCreary, Savannah Pritchett, and Abbie Burnham all recorded a hit in the game for the Eagles. Farmer took the lose on the mound for Mildred.
Game 2 is set for 2 p.m. in Waco with Game 3 to follow if needed.
