CHS Baseball: Minniear makes impact on diamond

Tosses four-inning perfect game

ENNIS — D.J. Minniear is the latest younger generation Corsicana Tiger to make a big impact on the baseball diamond.

Minniear tossed a four-inning perfect game as the sophomore right-hander lifted Corsicana to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Seagoville on Friday morning at the Ennis Tournament.

Corsicana (11-4-1) was slated to play Red Oak late Friday afternoon in its second game of the day.

Minniear had nine strikeouts and more importantly didn’t have any walks as he dominated Seagoville’s lineup.

“That’s exactly what we needed,” Tigers coach Heath Autrey said. “We threw a perfect game, got some hits and got out of here in four innings.”

Ben Goodrich was the hitting star again with a double and three RBIs. Zane Otten crushed a double to the right-center field gap for an RBI.

Minniear worked in the zone and threw first-pitch strikes to eight of the first 12 batters he faced. He threw 47 pitches, 35 for strikes. He had two ground ball outs and one fly ball out.

“It was a good outing,” Autrey said. “He’s a good young pitcher.”

On Thursday, the Tigers tied Sulphur Springs 3-3 in a controversial game that wasn’t decided because of a tournament time limit.

Among other things, Brady Harlan was called out on an attempted steal of home where it appeared he slid under the tag.

Bobby Lopez and Ben Goodrich had RBIs for the Tigers. Tyler Casbeer and Jeremy Fowler combined to give up three runs and four hits.

  • GC Basketball/Baseball: Mildred's Connor Hill sees life clearly

There was never any doubt for Connor Hill, never any question about what he would do or how he would do it.
Sure, there was that meeting with his mother and father and talks with the doctor when he was 10, talks and meetings that came accompanied with worry and concern.
    But never from Connor.
He just never dwelled on the fact he played sports with one eye. He didn't worry or talk about it when he was 10 and he never talked about it at Mildred High, where Hill emerged as a star on the basketball court and baseball diamond.

Am I just that old, or have amateur athletics gone absolutely nuts these days? On second thought, don’t answer that unless it’s yes to the nuts part.
High School and college basketball are on the verge of being totally ruined by AAU basketball. Top roundball prospects are identified by the junior high level if not earlier.

Karenke is worried about what happens on the diamond, and she had some concerns after Navarro made four errors in the second game that opened the door for Paris to pull off a 7-2 win after the Bulldogs and Ciara Luna controlled the first game with a 4-1 win.
