GC Baseball: Teague runs away from Blooming Grove, 11-3

BLOOMING GROVE —

Blooming Grove’s path to the playoffs just got a little trickier.

The Lions could have solidified their standing a win Tuesday, but Teague left Lions Field with a 11-3 victory, and moved into a virtual tie with Blooming Grove.

Blooming Grove fell to 14-5, and 7-2 in District 23-2A. Teague improved to 15-6, 6-2.

The game was close through five innings, tied 2-2 despite the fact there were four hits between the two teams. Teague added two in the sixth, without a hit, and Blooming Grove left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, despite getting two of its three hits.

In the seventh, Teague broke it open off relievers Jacob Conger and Daniel Pelzel, scoring seven runs on six hits. Austin Skinner had a two-RBI triple, part of a 3 for 3 night with three RBIs.

Blooming Grove starter Dalton Blake was done two batters after a squeeze bunt in the sixth made it 4-2, Teague, but through five he had been solid, surrendering three hits and striking out eight.

Blooming Grove scored in the third without the benefit of a hit. Shane Battenfield reached on an error, went to second as the ball scooted into left field, moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a balk to make it 2-1 Teague.

In the fourth, the Lions tied it, 2-2, when Jacob Williams led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jarod Obenour, then scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch after Teague starter Aaron Mitchell walked the bases loaded.

It was the first of three straight innings the Lions left two runners on. In the sixth, they got to reliever Austin Skinner for two hits, and loaded the bases, but left all three perched on their bags. They were 1 for 9 during the stretch with runners in scoring position, with the lone hit – a two-out, infield single from Brody Owens with two on – failing to plate a runner.

Teague effectively executed two suicide squeeze bunts, the latter of which made it 4-2 in the sixth when Seth Strader laid it down to Blake, who tried to flip it to home with his glove. Blake had hit the first batter, walked the second, then with a 2-0 count, coach Matt Anderson intentional put on Skinner, who was 2 for 2 with a double and RBI before the at bat.

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.

His father was a head coach for years at Pecos High and his brother-in-law is the head football coach at DeSoto, but Lawrence Williams Jr., a man who loves coaching football, never had any ideas about being the head man.
“I love coaching,'' said Williams as he sat at his desk in Blooming Grove, where he became the Lions' head coach this summer. “I just never thought about being the head coach and I never applied to be a head coach. With this job I can still coach.''
