GC Boys Hoops: Blooming Grove takes 64-42 loss to Teague in stride

BLOOMING GROVE — Blooming Grove took Tuesday night’s 64-42 home loss to Teague in stride.

The Lions have to. They’re still very much in the playoff race — in a three-way tie in the loss column for third place with Mildred and Buffalo. Teague played well, but the Lions didn’t do what they usually do, which is shoot the ball well and play stifling defense.

“That’s just one bad game,” said junior guard Daniel Pelzel, who led the Lions with 16 points. “We have to forget about it and win the next one.”

Blooming Grove (16-7, 4-3) struggled in the first half — trailing by 10 at the break — but pulled within 24-18 early in the third quarter.

That’s when Teague (10-11, 5-2) threw a full court press at Blooming Grove. And mass turnovers by the Lions led to easy baskets and a 17-4 run to end the half for Teague.

“I was scared to press with that being only our second game to use it,” Patrick said. “They are a very disciplined team and don’t turn the ball over. We tried it and we got a couple of steals.”

Blooming Grove expected Teague to press, Pelzel said.

“We’ve handled defensive pressure before,” he said. “We could have broken that but we made some lazy passes.”

Blooming Grove didn’t get off to a great start offensively, trailing 18-8 at halftime. Jacob Conger scored 5 of his 8 points in the half.

The Lions shot the ball better in the second half, but could only pull within 46-33 with 4:57 left. Tyler Ellis scored all seven of his points after halftime.

“We lost our minds for a spurt,” Blooming Grove coach Ben Kinnison said. “And we didn’t rebound.”
