Game Notes: Navarro hopes to shake its continuing issues with penalties. Returning to the site of its worst penalty game of the season could make matters interesting. The Bulldogs are ranked next to last in the NJCAA in penalties, averaging more than 11 per game for 103 yards. Navarro had 20 in the first game against Kilgore, but the Rangers were not far behind with 17 . . . QB Tausch is coming into his own for Kilgore. He threw for a season-high 461 yards and 4 TDs in a rout of Tyler last week. He has 11 TDs this season, but leads the conference with 8 INTs. . . . Tausch’s favorite receiver is Ed’Marquees Batties, who leads the conference with 55 catches, 785 yards and 9 TDs . . . LB Woods has the inside track on All-America honors after a regular season in which he averaged 12 tackles per game, forced five fumbles and recovered 3. He also had 16 TFLs for minus-65 yards . . . Shead leads the conference in rushing with 110.4 yards per game and is 6 yards short of 1,000.  He also leads the league in scoring (90 points). He had 104 yards in the first Kilgore game . . . Godfrey struggled throughout Game 1, completing just 11 of 31 passes for 147 yards and 1 interception . . . Corsicana’s Thomas McDonald leads Navarro and is ranked fifth in the league with 8 tackles per game.

  • Back in Action.jpg GC Football: Two-a-days: Back to Action

    It's here.
When the sun comes up Monday morning it's not just the dawn of a new day, but the dawn of a new season — it's the beginning of two-a-days.
Eight of the nine schools in the Golden Circle will begin football practice Monday while Corsicana waits until Aug. 8 to start. The Tigers begin a week later because they held spring practice.
For last year's playoff teams such as Mildred, Blooming Grove, Kerens, Frost and Hubbard Monday begins a road back to the postseason and for everyone else its the start of a new march. For everyone, it's the most optimistic day of the year.

  • RON MORGAN.jpg Morgan: ESPN was wrong in suspending Smith

I won’t be watching ESPN this coming week. For a network that has been made into an empire by covering baseballs, footballs, basketballs, golf balls, soccer balls, tennis balls (I’ve never watched hockey, but I understand they have no balls), this network is much like hockey. They lack the things they are covering.

    Breanna Baxter is back.
That's bad news for anyone facing the Kerens volleyball team this year.
But there is so much more than Baxter, an all-state player in volleyball, basketball and track & field who was the Golden Circle Female Athlete of the Year in 2014.

  • I7-31-14 Mayper.jpg Navarro Football: Nothing changes for success-minded Bulldogs

It didn't take long for Navarro football Coach Brian Mayper  to deliver his preseason message at the SWJCFC Media Day Thursday.
“No surprises at Navarro,'' said Mayper, the first of the seven conference coaches to speak to the media. “We're running the same stuff. You guys know we're going to run the ball. And thank God, we're not changes defenses again this year.''
Mayper's real message is that life at Navarro is all about winning, and all about a culture that expects to win.
“We expect to win them all. If you don't, you're in the wrong business,'' Mayper said. “I think our kids expect it, too.''

They are not only back, but they are talented — arguably the most talented group of volleyball players in Frost history.
